The impact of the earthquake intensifies, the shutdown of some steel plants in Türkiye

The multiple earthquakes in Türkiye on February 6 will affect the steel production and shipment of steel plants in the affected areas. Due to the heavy snow, the situation is deteriorating, the energy transmission line has failed, and the communication is interrupted.

Due to the losses caused, Türkiye has announced the fourth level alarm and appealed for international assistance. Botas, the national natural gas dealer, announced that the natural gas supply in the region had been stopped for safety reasons. Some highway and port damage, as well as the lack of natural gas, will affect steel production and delay shipment. Moreover, there are many large steel manufacturers in the affected areas, including Isdemir, Toscelik, MMK Metalurji, Ekinciler, Koc Metalurji and Bastig Metalurji.

At the same time, the earthquake damaged the port of Iskenderun, one of the country's largest steelmaking hubs. Many iron and steel plants in Türkiye are located in Iskenderun and its surrounding areas, about 120km away from the epicenter of the earthquake.

Isdemir, a comprehensive producer, has a hot rolling capacity of 3.5 million tons/year, producing flat and long products, and will have to stop production today. Its factory is located in Payas, Iskenderun, near the Syrian border. The production capacity of Atakas, MMK and Tosyali Toyo is 1.2 million tons/year, 2.5 million tons/year and 10000 tons/year respectively. It has factories in Iskenderun. Other steel manufacturers with long-term production operations in Iskenderun include Ekinciler, Basthug, Koc Celik and Yazici.

The steel plants in Türkiye are built for earthquake resistance, and there is no obvious early sign of dam aging for any major facilities, but the operation may be interrupted immediately after the earthquake.
